Description

Lipson Terrace is a planned group of seven houses, originally eight, dating from the early 19th century, located on Mount Gould Road in Plymouth. The houses were originally numbered 1 to 8, with the later combination of number 8 into number 7. The exterior is of stucco or render, with dry slate or asbestos slate roofs hidden behind a heavy moulded cornice. Number 4 has a steeper roof and two dormer windows, and the end stacks are of brick or stucco.

The houses are designed on a double-depth plan and are three storeys high. Nos. 1 and 2 have symmetrical three-window fronts with a central, Classical-style porch, while the others have similar porches to the left of the front. All porches have round-arched windows on the first floor. No. 1 retains original hornless sash windows with glazing bars, including fanlight heads to the first-floor sashes. No. 2 retains two original sash windows on the first floor; otherwise, the windows are later, horned sashes. The porches vary in detail and feature moulded entablatures, incised pilasters, and parapets, along with round-arched lights to the sides. Most doors are flush-panelled, fielded, or moulded, with six panels. No. 7, known as “The Mount,” has an altered parapet, pebbledash render, and only one porch. The left-hand return of No. 1 features a central bowed stair turret with a curved window containing glazing bars.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. Lipson Terrace forms a good planned group of houses, accompanied by entrance lodges (listed separately).
