Description
Whitleigh Barn is a former bank barn dating from the 16th or 17th century, with some additions from the 19th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings and features dry slate roofs. The main section of the barn is stepped up to the right and has a hip roof on that side, along with cast-iron ogee gutters. The building has a rectangular plan, with a large porch at the center of the front and a later lean-to on the far right, as well as another lean-to at the rear opposite.
The exterior is single-storey, but it was likely floored in the 18th or early 19th century when additional windows with segmental rubble arches were added to the rear. The front showcases a large central porch with an original round-arched doorway featuring ball stops, and a later window above it. To the right of the porch is an original outshut with a small window, while a later outshut is located to the left. The main barn front has three buttresses to the left of the porch, with a window and an altered doorway to the right. The right-hand side has a large loading doorway from the bank, which is now blocked. The left-hand side is buttressed and has an enlarged central window above another window. The rear is also buttressed and features two original chamfered slit ventilators, which are now blocked.
Inside, there are 20th-century partitions, and while the roof structure has not been inspected, it may hold historical significance. Whitleigh Barn is one of the earliest surviving farm buildings in the region, having been converted from a conventional threshing barn into a bank barn in the late 18th or early 19th century.
