Description
Looseleigh House is a country house built in the 18th century, remodelled in 1806, as indicated by the date on the rainwater head, and further altered in the mid to late 19th century. The house is constructed of stucco over what is likely rubble, with hipped slate roofs. The front block features a balustraded parapet and a bellcote over the rear range, along with brick axial stacks. The overall layout resembles a near courtyard plan, with a U-shaped block at the front, a wing extending at a lower level to the rear left, and a parallel service range at the back.
The house is two storeys tall with a symmetrical three-window front that includes quoin strips, moulded strings, and architraves. There are mid to late 19th-century canted bays on the left and right, featuring 2-pane horned sashes above cruciform casements, and a single sash above the central pilastered porch, which has a moulded cornice and a four-panel door. A Venetian stair window is located at the rear of the front block. The lower rear wings may partially date back to the original 18th-century house.
Inside, there is a good quality 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and column newels, along with fielded-panel doors.
