Description

These are a pair of former gardeners' cottages dating from 1936. They were designed by William Curtis Green and built by Maddock & Son Builders for the Cann Estate, commissioned by landowner P. D. Tuckett.

The cottages are constructed of white-washed roughcast with diminishing Delabole slate roofs and shallow corbels. They have a symmetrical plan, with two storeys. A minor alteration to the first-floor plan of No. 2 accommodates a third bedroom.

The principal, south-east elevation is symmetrical, featuring outer gable end bays and catslide roofs over the porches. A wide, low chimney stack is present on the outer bays, and a central chimney stack incorporates a rectangular date stone marked with "1936" and a diamond containing the letters "PTD." The rear, north-west elevation is also symmetrical with gable end bays that incorporate steps to the rear doors. The front entrance doors are timber, consisting of three planks with ovolo moulding and a central glazed diamond opening. Timber casement windows with stone cills are fitted.

Internally, both cottages retain their granite fireplaces and unusual plank doors consisting of five planks, with the second and fourth planks recessed and featuring chamfered battens. Original latches, spearheaded strap hinges, and bespoke H-L type hinges are also present. Flagstone floors remain in the kitchens and porches.

In 1904, Curtis Green had been commissioned to build Tuckett's Farmhouse (Grade II*) and Orchard Cottage (Grade II) for Tuckett. In 1936, he was commissioned again to undertake work on the Cann Estate, including additions to Cann House, a gamekeeper's cottage called Clittaford Cottage (Grade II) and these gardeners’ cottages.

No. 1 and 2 Cann Cottages are designated at grade II for being a substantially intact example of a pair of cottages in the Vernacular Revival style by the nationally important architect William Curtis Green. They retain interior features including granite fireplaces and doors with iron door furniture, and are a well-preserved example of Curtis Green's small scale domestic architecture, forming part of the commissioned buildings for P. D. Tuckett on the Cann Estate.
