Description

Nos. 35-39 on Adelaide Street are part of a planned terrace of small houses built in the mid-19th century by John Foulston. The houses are constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, featuring dry slate and asbestos slate roofs behind a stuccoed parapet. Notable architectural elements include a pediment on No. 36 (to the left), a moulded entablature on No. 38, roof dormers, and brick end stacks.

Each house has a double-depth plan, with one room at the front and an entrance to one side. They are two storeys plus an attic, with each house typically having a two-window range, except for No. 36, which has a one-window range. The original twelve-pane hornless sash windows have been replaced with horned copies or late 20th-century windows. The ground floor windows feature round-arched heads set within recessed round-arched panels, except for No. 36, which has a two-storey panel.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain original features of interest. This terrace is a rare example of a planned group by Foulston, showcasing a simpler version of his architectural style seen in his work around Hooe.
