Description

The dock basin walls and six associated bollards at the Royal William Victualling Yard were constructed between 1826 and 1832 by Sir John Rennie Junior for the Victualling Board. Made of granite ashlar and cast iron, the basin features a square shape with a curved northwest entrance. The dock sides and entrance are adorned with banded rustication, complemented by finely detailed flights of steps on either side of the opening.

The six square-section cast-iron bollards, which have concave sides and timber strips, are located at each corner of the basin and on either side of the Swing Bridge. Each bollard has a round top inscribed with "FLETCHER AND YOUNG/SOUTHAMPTON/1830".

Historically, the basin was designed to enhance access to the Yard for incoming ships, particularly during adverse weather conditions, and to minimize pilferage. Cranes once lined each side of the basin. Together with the Quay Walls, it creates a focal point flanked by the Mill and the Brewery, with Melville behind, forming the principal view of the Yard. The Royal William Victualling Yard is recognized as one of the most remarkable and complete early 19th-century industrial complexes in the UK, showcasing a unique example of Neo-Classical planning for a state manufacturing site.
