PLYMOUTH CREMYLL STREET, Stonehouse
NE Quay wall and 2 bollards, Royal William Victualling Yard
GV I
Quay wall and two bollards. 1826-31, by Sir J Rennie, for the Victualling Board.
Channelled rusticated granite ashlar, iron bollards. Quay walls extend for approximately 190m NE from the entrance to the Basin, beneath the Slaughterhouse, and terminate N of the Main Gates (qv). Pair of square section bollards are set into the edge of the quay either side of the front of the Mills and Bakery (qv), with timber strips to the concave sides, and "FLETCHER AND SONS/SOUTHAMPTON/1830" inscribed in the round top. HISTORY: construction of the Quay accounted for much of the overspend on Rennie's estimate for the Yard. Part of a group with the SW Quay Wall and Dock Basin (qv), forming the main landing quay for the Yard. The Yard is one of the most remarkable and complete early C19 industrial complexes in the country, and a unique English example of Neo-Classical planning of a state manufacturing site.
