Description
Two town houses, numbers 43 and 44, are located on the south side of New Street, in the Barbican area of Plymouth. Dating to the 18th century, they are constructed of brick with string courses and a parapet. Number 44 has a tall plinth of Plymouth limestone ashlar and a rendered upper facade, with an asbestos slate roof and tall brick stacks over the rear wall. The buildings are arranged in a U-shape, including rear wings.
The houses are three storeys high, with a 1:4-window range. Segmental arches feature above the original 12-pane hornless sash windows on the upper floors of number 43, which have thick glazing bars. The ground floor of number 43 has a 20th-century transomed window, while the remaining windows are late 19th-century horned sashes. A doorway is located to the right of number 43, and another to the left of centre of number 44, both with glazed overlights and panelled doors; the top panels of the door to number 43 were later glazed.
The interior of the properties has not been inspected, but may contain features of interest. New Street is notable for its significant collection of 17th and 18th-century houses.
