Description

This is a planned terrace of small houses built in the mid-19th century, designed by John Foulston. Originally, one of the houses, number 9, was a public house (The Royal Adelaide Arms) but has since been returned to domestic use. The houses are constructed of stucco with stucco detailing. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet with a moulded cornice, and the end houses have altered pediments. Brick chimney stacks are at the ends of the terrace. The internal layout is a double-depth plan, with most of the houses arranged as mirror-image pairs, featuring paired central doorways.

The houses are two storeys high, with each house originally having a two-window front, except for the end houses which have symmetrical one-window fronts. The windows were originally twelve-pane hornless sashes, though most have now been replaced with horned copies, or fitted with four-pane sashes, or had their glazing bars removed. Number 2 Adelaide Street has late 20th-century windows. The ground-floor windows have round-arched heads set within recessed round-arched panels, except for the end houses where the panels extend upwards towards the pediments. Doorways have moulded hoods supported by consoles, overlights, and panelled doors where original. Number 9 has a glazed shopfront on the ground floor, with a moulded entablature and pilasters with consoles.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected, but is likely to contain original features of interest.

This terrace represents a rare survival of a planned group by Foulston, and is a simpler example of his work than that found around the Hooe.
