Description
Two town houses at numbers 5 and 7 Durnford Street, Stonehouse, were likely built in the late 18th or early 19th century. The houses are stucco-faced, with decorative details, and have a roof hidden behind a moulded cornice. Two dormers break the parapet of number 5 (the left-hand house), and a further dormer is concealed behind the parapet of number 7. There is a brick end stack on the left side and a rendered axial stack above the party wall separating the two houses.
The houses appear to have a double-depth plan. The exterior presents a three-storey plus attic facade with a 2-window range. Number 5 features projecting windows on the upper floors, with moulded cornices above the paired windows on the second floor, directly above similar cornices over paired, keyed, semicircular arched openings on the floor below. Number 7 has windows set within simpler openings. All windows are four-pane sashes.
The ground floor of number 5 has a full-width entablature with a moulded cornice, and panelled end and central pilasters. The moulded entablature extends over a house doorway to number 7, which has a large carriage doorway with rusticated pilasters. The head of the carriage doorway rises, spanned by a shallow, keyed, segmental arch with a bracketed cornice. There is a panelled house doorway and a planked carriage doorway with ventilated top panels to number 7. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
