Description

This is a small country house, now subdivided, dating from 1831. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings, featuring slate roofs and rubble and freestone stacks. The building is arranged in a T-plan and built in an elaborate Tudor Gothic style.

The southwest-facing elevation, known as West Priory, has 1, 1, 3, 1, 1 bays. The second and sixth bays slightly project, topped with gables containing a single pointed light and ashlar stacks on either side. Ground floor niches are set under a cusped ogee head, while a first-floor image niche is sheltered under a highly decorative canopy with ogee tracery and a top. Outer bay windows are single-light casements under dripmoulds. The central bays feature 2-light cross windows, with a central 1-2-1 light oriel window displaying cusped ogee heads and a pierced parapet. A projecting, single-story porch is centrally located. This porch has octagonal corner turrets with panelled and crested tops; a chamfered door surround with a 4-centred head displays the date in the spandrels, with arms above. A canted bay is incorporated into the northwest gable end, showcasing elaborate carved details and a motto.

The southeast-facing elevation displays the gable end of West Priory, marked by a moulded string and octagonal moulded finials with crested tops. A projecting, single-story porch is centrally positioned with panelled octagonal corner turrets and an embattled parapet. It features a chamfered doorway with a 4-centred head and panelled, traceried inner doors. Above the porch is a 3-light, Perpendicular style staircase window. To the right of the window stands a projecting stack with two pairs of octagonal chimneys linked by a cusped traceried stretcher and a surrounding parapet. A single-story block, with lancet windows, projects and connects to a conservatory - an elaborate, single-story building arranged in 3, 4, and 3 bays. The central four bays project as a canted bay window with cusped ogee heads to the tracery. A decorative parapet includes daggers and inverted daggers, as well as thin octagonal pinnacles with crested tops. Ogee-headed doorways pierce the projecting centre of the gable ends. The conservatory features iron glazing bars and iron panelled roof trusses.

Inside West Priory, the entrance hall displays panelled Perpendicular style doors and wall panelling, all with cast iron tracery, along with a ribbed and panelled ceiling. The drawing room contains a skirting board with a quatrefoil frieze, panelled and ribbed ceiling, a decorative frieze, and a 4-centred arch leading to the northwest bay. Within The Priory, the sitting (dining) room features a framed ceiling with fleurons and carved foliage, shutters and doors with iron traceried panels, and 4-centred heads to the doors. The staircase hall showcases a dog-leg stair with a Gothic panelled iron balustrade and stained glass within the hall window.
