Description

Alburys is a detached villa built in 1846, featuring ashlar on the main range and Roman cement on the service range, with slate roofs. It is designed in the Italianate style, reflecting the pattern-book approach of J.C. Loudon. The villa has two storeys, with the north front showcasing advanced end bays and a recessed central section. The windows include single light sashes with marginal glazing and tripartite sashed windows in canted bays on the ground floor, along with paired narrow sashes with round heads on the upper floor. An ornate wrought iron grille decorates the two-leaf door, which features anthemion decoration. The left-hand window has Soaneian finials on its cornice, and there is an open bellcote at the gable apex with a round arch on each face. The west front includes a projecting loggia with a Venetian-type opening above a porch that has tripartite French window glazing. The south front features a projecting one-storey conservatory with segmental-headed window openings, combining sash and casement fenestration, and a dentil cornice. The eaves cornice is deeply projecting and bracketed, with tall bracketed stacks. The service range to the east is in a similar but more austere style. Inside, the entrance hall boasts fine contemporary anthemion motif decoration. The house was built for a local solicitor named James.
