Description

Causeway House is a house with origins in the 17th century, significantly extended around 1800, and subsequently altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed of rubble, rendered and has a pantiled roof with ridge and gable stacks, and plain tiles. The front elevation has two storeys and four windows. The first floor windows are 2-light casements with six panes to each light, a 9-pane casement, a 4-pane casement, and a 2-light casement of four panes each light. The ground floor has a sash window, a 2-light casement, a half-glazed door, and a 2-light casement of six panes each light. The roof has been extended to the right over a single-storey addition, which contains a door and an upper loading door with strap hinges on the inner side. A garage is present on the right return. The left return has a blank gable end, and the rear has a canted bay to the right with a sash and an 8-pane sash to each side, pilasters between the sashes, and a plain tiled roof. The roof is extended to the left over a 20th-century French window. To the left of the bay is a two-storey parallel range from the 19th century with a similar bay lacking a roof and a 3-light 20th-century casement at first floor. This range has a 20th-century concrete pantiled roof, an external stack, and a first-floor window with six panes. The left end of the range has a slightly lower roof level with a 20th-century plate-glass window at ground floor and a glazed porch set in an angle. The interior was not inspected, but may originally have followed a through-passage plan.
