Description

This collection of mid-19th to early 20th century funerary monuments commemorates the Joules family, who were known to be Gypsies local to Somerset. The collection is situated in the churchyard, approximately 8 metres north-east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin.

The ensemble consists of eight monuments—four headstones and three corresponding footstones within a wrought iron enclosure, and three additional headstones, two footstones, and a funerary vase located to the west of the enclosure and near to it. The monuments are arranged in two parallel rows and each is of a different date and unique design.

The row outside the enclosure, reading from north to south, includes a headstone remembering Henry Joules, who died in March 1929 at the age of 96; a headstone commemorating Isaac Joules, who died March 10th 1841 at the age of 70 years; and a headstone dedicated to Merily Joules, who died in 1827. A limestone funerary vase bears the inscription “JOHN JOULES / 1874 – 1963 / AT REST”.

Within the wrought iron enclosure, the headstones and footstones read, from north to south: one headstone with illegible text and an associated footstone marked “W J”; a second headstone dedicated to Richard Joules, who died March 1st 1867 at the age of 56, also remembering his wife, Jane Joules, who died December 9th 1898 at the age of 92, with further text illegible; a third headstone with illegible text and an associated illegible footstone; and finally a headstone dedicated to Druscilla Joules, eldest daughter of R and J Joules, who died October 25th 1929 at the age of 94 years.

The enclosure is defined by a wrought iron railing constructed from 12 twisted square upright members connected by horizontal lengths of square rods with a twist incorporated mid-length. The uprights feature a combination of arrowhead and fleur-de-lys finials.
