Description

The Hindmarsh Monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 26 metres south-west of the porch of the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the early 20th century and is made of polished red granite, showcasing a fine example of late Victorian funerary style. The square base features brackets on each side and broach stops, with radiating circles incised at each corner. The pedestal has an inscription on the front and is adorned with Corinthian columns at each corner. A frieze with an incised flower design and triglyph blocks is present, along with round pediments on each side, each topped with finials at the corners. An octagonal base supports a small dome that has incised fluting and is surmounted by a draped urn. The roll-moulded border includes blocks at the corners with roll-moulded crosses. The monument is dedicated to Bessie Jane Hindmarsh and was established in 1919.
