Description
The clock tower, located approximately 300 metres northwest of Powdermill Cottage, is a Grade II listed structure that was formerly part of mill premises. It likely dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The tower is constructed from small squared and coursed limestone, featuring thin, slab-like ashlar quoins, although the roof has been destroyed. The tower measures about 2.5 meters square and stands 5 meters high, but its original height is unknown.
On the north side, which faces the river, there is a square doorway with ashlar jambs and a stone lintel. Above this doorway is an oculus made of brick, which has been filled but contains a central ashlar block with an opening that may have been used for a shaft or clock drive. To the left of the doorway is an opening for a small window, which lacks a lintel and has damaged masonry above it. At the back of the tower, there is another doorway with ashlar jambs and remnants of a brick cambered arch.
Inside, the walling shows remnants of plastering and is built in rubble. There are two remnants of bonding timbers or plates that may have supported joists or small beams over the door openings. Although the tower is now in a ruinous and unstable condition, it remains an important remnant of the large powder mill complex that existed on the site from around 1650 to the 1820s. It is believed that the tower was connected either to a small chapel or to site offices, but it now stands isolated. The structure holds significant historical interest related to the site.
