Description
The Brick Tower, formerly listed as the Shot Tower, is a late 18th century or early 19th century structure located in Crane Park. This tapering brick tower is constructed in English bond and resembles a tower mill. It features a lead roof, with the door and lower windows adorned with painted arches, weatherboarded spandrels, and a stone keystone. The interior is derelict and lacks floors. The tower is surrounded by trees and is situated beside one of the streams into which the River Crane is divided by dams and sluices. This building was part of the old Hounslow Powder Mills, which are believed to be among the first gunpowder mills in England, dating back to the time of the Battle of Crecy in 1315. It is the only surviving structure from the mills and was previously misidentified as a Shot Tower; it may have actually served as a grinding mill.
