Description
The Hampton Hill War Memorial is a tall stone Latin cross located in the churchyard of St James Church. At the intersection of the cross head, there is a crowned sword carved in relief. The octagonal cross shaft features roses carved on all four sides and rises from a small octagonal plinth, which sits on a two-staged base.
The upper stage of the base consists of four broad pilasters that hold panels with metal lettering recording the names of those who died in the First World War. The lower octagonal stage is decorated with a general dedicatory inscription and floral designs. It also has four separate panels that list the names of those who died in the Second World War.
The main dedication on the base states: THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVER MORE/ THESE DIED THE/ DEATH OF HONOUR/ FOR GOD KING/ AND COUNTRY IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919.
The memorial is enclosed by the original low bollards connected by a chain.
