Description
The Lane monument is located in the churchyard about 5 metres southeast of the porch of the Church of St. Mary. This headstone and footstone date from the early 18th century and are made of limestone. Both stones feature finely carved borders with diamond and circle motifs. The headstone has a skull at the top center, while the footstone displays an hourglass at the top, and both have shaped tops with high-quality lettering. The monument commemorates John Lane, a gentleman of this parish who died in 1729, and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1679. John Lane bequeathed £120 to the parish for the education of poor children and provided other benefits, including two shillings to the sexton for the care of the family graves.
