Description

Yarborough Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the 16th century, with later extensions added to the rear and the lower end. The building is constructed of limestone rubble and features an interlocking concrete tile roof, along with brick ridge and end stacks that were finished in the 19th century. The layout consists of a three-room plan with an axial stack that backs onto a former through passage. The originally unheated lower end has been extended to the left, likely in the early to mid-19th century, and there are rear outshots that house a central staircase, also dating from the 19th century.

The cottage is two storeys high and has a four-window range on the main façade, with an extension to the left. It has timber lintels above a 20th-century plank door and small-paned, two-light wood casements. Inside, the cottage retains many original features, including chamfered ground-floor beams, an open fireplace with a 19th-century mantelshelf that backs onto the through passage, which has been blocked to the rear with a window opening from the 19th century. There is also an adjoining chamfered, four-centred arched wood-framed doorway of 16th-century style, connecting the original central hall to the through passage. The roof has collar trusses and was formerly fitted with tenoned purlins that have been reset. Yarborough Cottage is a notably complete example of a post-medieval farmhouse that follows the traditional three-room with through passage plan, and the framed doorway is a significant feature.
