Description
The war memorial in Yatton, built around 1922, is a tall, monolithic Ionic column made of what is probably Portland stone. It is set upon a square plinth and stands on four shallow steps. On the north face of the plinth, there is a bronze or brass plaque inscribed with the words: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF YATTON / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 / (name and regiment)'. A plaque on the west side honors those from the parish who served in the Second World War, stating: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE WAR OF 1939-1945 / (surname and regiment for those on war service; name of those killed by enemy action)'.
The memorial was designed by the Reverend F.E. Peert and was unveiled on 22nd July 1922 to commemorate the men of the parish who died in the First World War. Additional inscriptions were later added for those who died in the Second World War. The Yatton war memorial is recognized for its cultural and historical significance, serving as a poignant reminder of the impact of world events on the local community, and it contributes elegantly to the village street scene.
