Description
The Parish Church of St Andrew is a Grade I listed medieval church located at the west end of the town, set on a hillside above the road. It has a cruciform layout with a central tower that features a 12th-century corbel-table and paired openings, topped by a 17th-century addition. The chancel also retains a 12th-century corbel-table. Inside, the crossing arches to the north and east are from the 12th century, displaying a unique late Romanesque chevron detail on the chancel arch, with shafts that have carved capitals and a hoodmould above the arch. The early 14th-century south nave arcade is notable, as is the Perpendicular clerestory. Much of the interior, particularly the roofs, underwent extensive restoration in the 19th century. A late medieval incised slab can be found in the chancel. Additionally, Arthur Hallam, the inspiration for Tennyson's 'In Memoriam', is buried in the south transept.
