Description

Newman House is a building that was originally constructed as a garrison storehouse between 1716 and 1718. It has undergone alterations, including a porch and internal changes made by Richardson and Gill in 1927, and restoration in 1971. The structure is made of roughly coursed granite rubble with dressed granite, topped by a stone-coped gabled slate roof and rendered end stacks. It features a double-depth plan, standing two storeys high with attics, and presents a symmetrical five-window range. The windows are fitted with segmental arches, dressed voussoirs, and keystones, and include horned 8/8-pane sashes. The porch has a cambered roof and a similar sash window on the front, along with a granite lintel above a four-panelled door on the left side. The dressed quoins rise from the plinth to a coved cornice, and there are hipped dormers with slate-hung cheeks and segmental-arched horned 6/6-pane sashes.

At the rear, there is a courtyard enclosed by a mid-19th century extension to the south, a 1960s range to the east, and a mid-19th century north range featuring a brick segmental arch over an entry that connects to bays styled similarly to the early 18th century range, with a keyed segmental arch over a horned 8/8-pane sash above a double entry with a 20th-century panelled screen and porch. Inside, the building showcases chamfered reused beams and an early 18th century dog-leg staircase with a landing, featuring a moulded handrail and turned balusters on a closed string. Originally built at a cost of £306 15s 10d, Newman House is an important and mostly complete example of its type, contributing to the historical significance of the fortification and recognized as one of the most architecturally elaborate buildings on the islands.
