Description
Winchester House is an early 19th-century house located at the end of a row in Weymouth. It features painted brickwork and a steeply sloped mansard roof. The building has two storeys and an attic. On Maiden Street, there is a narrow gabled 4-pane sash window in a flush box, situated above a 3-light 20th-century steel casement window and a 3-pane bowed shop front that includes a door and a 3-pane transom light to the left. To the left of the shop front, accessed by three steps, is a 4-panel moulded door with a very shallow transom light.
The front of the building facing St Alban Street (No.17A) has a raking dormer with a steel casement window above a 2-light steel casement. The ground floor features the original shop front, which has two bowed oriel windows with 4 and 3 vertical panes respectively, supported by wooden brackets. Centrally located is a part-glazed door beneath a 3-pane transom light, and the front is adorned with a continuous moulded fascia board with a cornice, resting on a small plinth. The building is noted for its interesting shop fronts. The interior has not been inspected.
