Description

No. 22, also known as St Michael's House, is a mid-18th century brick building. It is constructed of brown brick with a side wall of rubble, partially covered in roughcast, and features red brick dressings and red brick voussoirs. The roof is tiled, with brick gable copings and red brick stacks. The building is two storeys high with attics. A brick modillion eaves cornice runs along the top. The front has five ranges of segment-headed sash windows with glazing bars and keystones. There are two attic dormers with hipped tile roofs, tile-hung cheeks, a moulded and dentilled cornice, and modern windows. A ground floor bay window is present, with sash windows, glazing bars and a dentilled cornice. The entrance features a six-panelled door, with two glazed panels and four moulded panels, set within panelled reveals and a soffit. The doorcase has fluted pilasters, idiosyncratic capitals, a blind semi-circular fanlight, and an open pediment with spherical dentils and paterae in the soffit. The building is part of a group with Nos. 18 to 22 (even) and the Junior School.
