Description
The Former Dorset County Council Junior School, previously listed as Junior Schools, is located on the north side of West Street. Built around 1849, it was originally a Congregational Chapel that opened on New Year's Day in 1790 for a congregation that had split from the main community the year before. After the congregation reconciled in 1849, the building was converted into a British School. The structure features a stucco front and a pitched slate roof, standing two storeys tall. It has four giant pilasters without capitals, which have sunk panels that support a pediment. There are three ranges of segment-headed windows with glazing bars, and the entrance includes a door with a segment-headed fanlight, along with a segment-headed relieving arch on plain imposts. The Junior School, along with Nos 18 to 22 even, forms a cohesive group.
