Description
The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist is a small church built between 1865 and 1866, designed by architect J Hicks. It features ironstone walls and stone slate roofs with coped gables, showcasing the Gothic Revival style. The church includes a nave, a chancel with a north vestry, and a south porch. A small west bell turret has a trefoil arch beneath a stone gable. The nave and chancel have plain lancet windows, while the east window has triple lancets. The west window features double lancets with a quatrefoil above. Inside, the walls are plastered and adorned with contemporary mural paintings. Notable features include well-carved capitals on the chancel arch, corbels, and cornices in the nave and chancel roofs. The chancel and west windows have rere-arches with Purbeck marble shafts and carved caps. Both the nave and chancel have arch-braced roofs. Most fittings are contemporary, except for a 17th-century brass tablet from the former Priory Church. The churchyard contains three medieval stone coffin lids that are somewhat eroded. This church is a good example of a small 19th-century church. Additionally, the chancel arch from the former Priory Church was re-erected in St John's Chapel, Creech-Steeple Parish.
