Description

Monkton Wyld Court is a large house set in grounds, which was formerly the Rectory. It was built in 1848 by R C Carpenter. The building features rubble stone walls with Caen stone dressings and stone gable copings, topped by a slate roof with gable ends. A grouped stone stack is located at the center of the eaves. The house has a long double depth range with rear service attachments and stands two storeys high with attics, featuring approximately six windows.

The south elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing two gable ends in bays two and six. Bay two has canted bays on both the ground and first floors, while bay six has a canted bay on the ground floor only. The ground floor windows are designed in the Decorated style, featuring net tracery and segmental-pointed heads, with labels that have head-stops at both ends. The first floor windows are two-light with trefoil heads, some set under segmental arches. There are two attic dormer windows with two-light wooden casements. The garden-front door, located in bay five, has a segmental pointed head. A projecting stack is positioned at the center of the range, to the left of the door.

The main entrance door, leading to the hall, is on the west elevation and features stone jambs with a segmental-pointed arch in the style of the 13th century, complete with a label that has returns and head-stops. Inside, there are stone fireplaces with segmental-pointed heads. The main staircase, made entirely of stone, has an entrance arch that matches the door, with nook-shafts adorned with foliage capitals. The staircase consists of two flights, with the second flight returning after the landing and featuring a quarter spiral.
