Description

The Congregational Chapel, built in 1749 and enlarged in 1825, is located on Whitcombe Road in Beaminster. The chapel features lias ashlar walls and a pyramidal tile roof topped with a ball finial at the apex. It has one tall storey and is composed of two bays, each with tall three-light round-headed windows that include keystones. The square section mullions are adorned with tracery patterns in the heads of the windows. There are two high oculus windows on either side, framed with dressed stone architraves. At both ends of the chapel, there are two-leaf wooden doors with fanlights above, also featuring dressed stone architraves with projecting dropped keys.

Inside, the galleries have been removed. A tablet on the north wall commemorates James Daniel, Gent., who escaped after the Battle of Sedgemoor, and notes the Daniel Burial Ground at Knowle Farm. There is also a plaque dedicated to Richard Hine, who lived from 1860 to 1939. The interior includes reeded elliptical doorcases.

An attached coursed lias stone wall runs 25 yards east along the road and features stone coping. This wall dates from the early 18th century and has one later inserted doorway.
