Description
The bridge over the railway at Chantmarle is a stone structure built around 1910 by Francis Inigo Thomas for Francis Savile. It crosses the Yeovil to Weymouth railway line and serves as part of the approach to Chantmarle Manor.
Constructed from Ham stone, the bridge features concrete supports and brick retaining walls. It is a single-span design with stone balustrades along the parapets. On either side facing the railway line, there are large central keystones made of ashlar stone, with voussoirs and corbelled sections on the supporting embankment walls. The parapets consist of four sections of balustrading with piers in between. The central piers above the keystones have recessed panels. At each end of the parapets, there are large piers, and a moulded plinth runs along the length of the bridge on both sides. The end piers are topped with large blocking stones, from which the parapet cappings extend over the balustrades.
