Description
Westwood Cottage is a house built around 1800. It features random stone-rubble walls and a thatched roof. The cottage is a one-and-a-half storey, two-bay structure topped by a half-hipped thatched roof with a brick chimney at the east end. The front elevation has a mid-20th century glazed entrance door on the left and, on the right, a two-light timber-frame window with horizontal glazing bars that serves both the ground and first floors. Additionally, there is a 15-pane metal-frame window in the upper storey at the east end.
Inside, the front door leads into a room that includes a fireplace and a winder staircase located at the east end. This staircase replaces an earlier version, and the fireplace was reopened in the mid-20th century. The ceiling features exposed joists of various dates. A door at the west end connects to an attached lean-to. The first floor has large timber floorboards, and a stepped chimney breast can be seen at the east end. The A-frame roof includes an exposed central truss and a single row of purlins. The later 19th and 20th-century additions to the north, east, and west, as well as the 20th-century glazed porch to the south, are not included in this description.
