Description

The promenade shelter located to the east of number 135 on the Esplanade in Weymouth is a late 19th-century structure. It features castings by Jeffreys of Westminster and is made from cast iron and wood with a lead roof. The low-pitched hipped roof has small gablets and is adorned with intricate decorative details along the ridge and finials, as well as eaves beneath a plain frieze. The shelter is open-sided and consists of two bays supported by three pairs of slender turned wood columns, which have cast-iron brackets. The ceiling is formed by a grid of moulded beams and a panelled soffit divided into twelve compartments, with diagonal 'dragon beams' in the corner bays.

The shelter includes glazed central and end screens that feature a central mullion and a transom at the height of the brackets. Wooden slatted seats are attached to cast-iron brackets. Extending from the promenade over the beach is a corresponding balcony with four by one bays, supported by cast-iron standards with scrolled stays and two horizontal rails that return at the ends, all resting on a framework of cast-iron beams. A small cast plate on the south end above the seating indicates 'J. JEFFREYS/ ....& CAST IRON/ 10 GREAT QUEEN STREET/ WESTMINSTER'. This shelter is one of seven similar structures in the area, well-maintained, and is one of two near the promenade edge that features its own section of balcony, making it the northernmost of the group.
