Description
Monk's Yard and The Cross is a house that has been converted into a pair of cottages. It has medieval origins and was remodeled in the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with flared headers, timber-framing, and features a part ashlar projecting front bay. It has a thatched roof that is hipped to the right and gabled on the left, with brick stacks located near the center and on the left gable. The structure has two storeys and an irregular range of five windows. The two central bays project outward. The ground floor windows have segmental brick heads and include two and three-light casements, some with horizontal glazing bars, others with full glazing bars, and some with leaded lights. There is a 20th-century part-glazed door at the extreme right, next to a 20th-century garage door.
Inside, there are notable features including 16th-century stop-chamfered beams and four roof trusses, one of which retains traces of smoke blackening.
