Description

Coupar House is a fine mid-18th century house located behind a forecourt. This three-storey building features a five-window brick front, with the central bay made of bluish burnt brick and the sides in red brick. The central section is distinguished by stone Ionic pilasters on the lower floors and rusticated quoins above. The side quoins are rusticated below the main cornice, with panelled pilasters above. The main stone cornice is positioned at the second floor level, which is treated as an attic storey, featuring a moulded stone coping that rises to a small gable in the centre, creating the appearance of an open pediment. The central second floor window is round-headed, while the central first floor window has scroll sides. All windows are adorned with moulded stone architraves and keys, and there are stone plinth and string courses. The stone doorway is designed in the Roman Doric style, featuring half-round pilasters, triglyphs, and a pediment. The interior has been recently and sympathetically restored, showcasing a fine original staircase, panelling, carved chimney-pieces, and plasterwork. The house is attributed to the architect Nathaniel Ireson. Coupar House, along with the walls, railings, stables, Limetree House, and Nos 2, 3, 5, and 7, forms a group of buildings.
