Description
The Edwardes Statue is a commemorative statue dedicated to Sir Henry Edwardes, created in 1885 by W and T Wills. The statue is made of white Sicilian marble and stands on a plinth of Cornish granite. The figure is over life-size and is positioned on a square pedestal approximately 3 meters high. This pedestal features a blocking course on a moulded capping, a tall shaft with an inscription, a moulded plinth, and a double-stepped base. The inscription includes: "Erected by public inscription AD 1885.. (to) Sir HENRY EDWARDES, MP, One of the Representatives of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis....... to 1885, When the town ceased to be A Parliamentary Borough."
A historical note mentions that the Southern Times on 16 January 1886 reported the public unveiling of the statue, praising it as "a splendid work of art" with "excellent action, being dignified and full of life." The cost of the statue was reported to be close to £800. The article also compared it unfavorably to another statue known as the King's Statue. Sir Henry Edwardes was a significant benefactor to Weymouth, contributing to local projects such as the Almshouses in Rodwell Avenue, which adds to the monument's local historical interest.
