Description

The Engineers' Shop and Training Centre at the Court Mills was built around 1859. It features hammer dressed stone with red brick dressings and has a pitched slate roof. The building has coped gable ends on kneelers and a bell cote with a shaped gable at the south end, along with a finial at the north end that includes spirally placed black brick headers and a moulded brick cornice. It is two storeys high with attics and has nine ranges of industrial windows. The north end has one range enclosed in a red brick relieving arch. The south end features a cast iron external staircase supported by a brick wall and iron brackets leading to a balcony, which has elaborate ornamental balusters inscribed "J B Payne. Perry Street Works, Chard. 1859". Inside, there is one row of cast iron columns supporting brick jack arches, and cast iron brackets that originally held machinery on the ground floor.
