Description

The Court, including its forecourt railings, dates to 1844, as evidenced by a datestone bearing the initials "I.H.P." However, the associated company, Bridport Gundry Ltd., traces its origins back to 1665, and a building previously occupied the site as shown on Hutchins’ map of 1773. The main building is constructed of rubble with a pitched slate roof and coped gable ends. It is three storeys high and features eight ranges of segment-headed, three-light casement windows with lead glazing bars; one window on the second floor is round-arched. A brick modillion eaves cornice runs along part of the front. A contemporary residential extension, built of stucco and with a pitched slate roof and coped gables, adjoins the west end. This extension is two storeys high and has a band, with three ranges of casement windows with glazing bars and hoodmoulds. Contemporary iron railings with a vine leaf design, characteristic of Bridport, define the south side of the forecourt. The Court serves as the offices of Bridport Gundry Ltd., a company formed from the amalgamation of most local twine and net manufacturers, making it the town’s largest and oldest employer.
