Description

The Church of St Stephen was built in 1907 and designed by architect C E Ponting. This church features an Arts and Crafts style with stone walls and tiled roofs, including stone copings on the gables and a stone slate roof on the porch. The layout includes a nave, chancel, west tower, south transept, and a south porch with a vestry located north of the chancel.

The tower is notable for its battlemented parapet adorned with carved gargoyles. The belfry contains two-light gothic windows with perpendicular tracery, while a buttress on the east end of the south face of the tower features a canopied niche with a statue. The south porch showcases a gothic arch with leaf carvings in its mouldings.

The nave's north and south walls are fitted with square-headed windows that have perpendicular tracery. The south transept is highlighted by a four-light gothic window with geometrical tracery, and the chancel's south wall has a single-light traceried window. The east wall of the chancel boasts a five-light gothic window with curvilinear tracery.

Inside, the church has impressive oak roofs in the nave, chancel, and transept, designed in an out-braced collar-beam form with windbracing. Stained glass can be found in the east windows and the south transept window, with heraldic glass in the west window. The church fittings, including the pulpit, lectern, stalls, and pews, are all made of oak and appear to be contemporary with the building. A notable feature is the alabaster font, which has a square bowl on a circular stem supported by angels at the corners. This church is a good example of Arts and Crafts design.
