Description

No 542 (Philomel) and No 543 are now two cottages but were probably originally one house, built in two phases. No 542 dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and may have started as an open-hall house. It features timber-framed walls, partly filled with wattle and daub and partly with brick. The thatched roof has a brick stack with a moulded cap. The original layout consisted of two rooms with an end stack and a lobby entrance. The building has one storey and an attic. There is a ledged door under a timber gabled hood with a tiled roof. The ground floor has two casement windows with lead lights, while the attic contains one dormer with an original oriel window featuring moulded mullions and lead lights. Inside, the main ground floor room has a large open fireplace with a bread oven that has been partly built up. Both rooms have deeply chamfered ceiling beams, and the main bedroom has a stop-chamfered ceiling beam.

No 543 was likely added to No 542 in the 18th to early 19th century. It has brick walls, a thatched roof, and shares a brick stack with No 542. This building also has one storey and an attic, with a later single-storey lean-to at the rear. The ground floor features one casement window with glazing bars, and the attic is lit by a window in the gable wall. The main ground floor room has chamfered ceiling beams.
