Description
This is a terrace of four estate cottages located on the southwest side of Kings Road East, Swanage. They were built in 1894 for the third Earl of Eldon. The cottages are constructed of rock-faced coursed limestone, with a red clay tile roof featuring exposed rafter and purlin ends, and tile coping to the verge parapets. Axial and gable-end stacks have weathered set-offs, red brick shafts, and projecting flues.
The terrace comprises four cottages; numbers 15 has three bays, while numbers 17 to 21 each have two bays. The northeast front has a 3:2:2:2 bay arrangement with four-pane sash windows under cambered arches, serving both the windows and doorways. The doorways have rectangular overlights and panelled, glazed doors.
Rock-faced limestone garden area walls, complete with saddle-back coping and gate piers, are situated in front of the cottages. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace represents a well-designed example of late 19th century estate housing.
