Description
STOURTON CAUNDLE STOURTON CAUNDLE: ST 7114 VILLAGE STREET (WEST SIDE) 13/191 Manor Farmhouse and barn adjoining to west. 4.10.60 GV II Farmhouse with adjoining barn. Barn probably late C16 or early C17 , house early C18 though may contain an earlier core. House is of coursed rubble with stone-slate hipped roof. Brick stacks to left of door, part way along ridge and to front eaves right. 2 storeys and attic, 5 window range. C19 sashes with moulded architraves and glazing bars. Those to first bay are of 3-lights and those to the 4th bay are double. To the ground floor right is a rectangular bay window of 3 sashes with glazing bars. Wooden lintels. Part-glazed door with flat hood having simple entablature supported on slender columns. Internally the kitchen has a stopped chamfered beam and there is an C18 staircase with turned balusters, moulded handrails and a panelled dog-gate. (RCHM) The barn continues the range of the house and is of coursed rubble with a part stone-slate and part tile, half-hipped roof. 2 opposing porches, one half-hipped and one gabled. Pantiled outshut south and C19 extension with roman tiles west. Roof supported on 2 jointed cruck trusses the western one with slip tenon and 2 soffit pegs and the eastern one probably edge pegged. Crucks spring from wall-plates approximately 5 ft above ground. Arch-braced collars and later tie beams. "RCHM, Dorset, vol III", pp 267-8, no4.
