Description

York Buildings is a pair of houses, now used as a single residence, that form part of an original terrace of seven houses built around 1785, with modifications made in the mid-19th century. The buildings are rendered and have a tiled roof. They rise three storeys, with an attic and a basement. Each house features a hipped dormer: No. 56 has a sash window, while No. 57 has an early two-light casement. The front façade includes plain sash windows, two on the second floor, and two bold two-storey canted oriel windows topped with low-pitched lead hipped cappings and a modillion cornice. Set back from the main wall plane, there are two sash windows in each basement. Original panelled doors are located to the left and right, accessed by six steps. The basement areas are surrounded by spearhead railings that return at the ends and center, with a low coped wall on the far right. The right side of the building has a plain double gable, while the rear, facing New Street, is primarily constructed of unrendered brickwork and features a mansard roof slope with dormers and sash windows in moulded flush boxes, including two four-pane, two twelve-pane, and a stair sash with margin panes. There is also a low two-storey gabled service wing. The interior has not been inspected. Originally, there were three houses on this site, but one has been demolished. The remaining houses likely had similar details to No. 51, although their fronts have been modified over time.
