Description

The promenade shelter opposite Chesterfield Place in Weymouth is a late 19th-century structure built by Bird and Cox, contractors based in Weymouth. It features a combination of cast iron and wood, with timber glazed panels and a lead-covered wooden roof. The low-pitched hipped roof is adorned with small gablets and intricate decorative cast-iron details along the ridge and eaves on all sides. The shelter is open-sided with two bays, supported by three pairs of slender turned wooden columns, which are complemented by cast-iron fretted brackets. The ceiling consists of a grid of moulded beams and a panelled soffit divided into twelve compartments, with diagonal 'dragon beams' in the corner bays. The glazed screens include a central mullion and a transom at the height of the brackets, while wooden slatted seats are attached to cast-iron scrolled brackets. This shelter is one of seven similar structures in the area and is maintained in good condition. It is set back from the edge of the promenade, which has been extended, although it originally would have been positioned at the edge with its own railed balcony. Most of the details appear to be original or have been carefully replaced, and a small plate at the southern end notes the contractors' name.
