Description
No. 55 York Buildings is a house located in Weymouth, dating from around 1785. It was once the central feature of a terrace of seven houses and is slightly stepped forward from its neighbors. The building is rendered with a tiled roof and has three storeys, an attic, and a basement.
At the top, there is a hipped tile dormer with a two-light casement. Below, a bold two-storey bow oriel features nine-pane sash windows on the second floor and twelve-pane sash windows on the first floor, separated by pilasters that have fluted capitals on the second floor. The upper level includes a moulded cornice above a fluted frieze adorned with some paterae and a cable-mould sill, all supported by two slender wooden columns at the ground floor. Behind these columns, there is a smaller bow with plain sash windows, flanked by part-glazed doors leading up six steps, each set in a moulded architrave with a frieze and dentil cornice. A small basement light is also present, and a deep ridge stack is located to the left.
The rear of the building, which faces New Street, features a narrow wing with four-pane sashes in flush boxes. The main range has a tiled mansard roof with a four-pane sash dormer and a twelve-pane sash in a flush box at the first floor, along with a brick stack to the right. This house remains a splendid and well-preserved center of the original terrace. Previously, the second floor had two casements that have since been replaced with appropriate sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
