Description

Magna Cottage is a pair of attached cottages and an outbuilding that have been converted into a single house. It dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from flint and random stone rubble with brick dressings, and the rear is partly rendered. It features a wheat-reed thatched roof with gabled ends and has brick stacks at the axial and gable ends.

The original part of the cottage, which has a one-room plan, is located at the left (southwest) end. The central section, also with a one-room plan, was likely added in the 19th century, possibly as a separate cottage, while the right end appears to be a later 19th-century outbuilding extension. There is a small single-storey outhouse at the right end and a single-storey extension added to the back in the 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-window front facing southeast. The first floor features three 19th-century two-light casements, while the ground floor has one three-light casement and two 20th-century two-light casements. There is a plank door on the left and a 20th-century glazed door to the right of centre, all set in brick openings with cambered brick arches. The later 19th-century outbuilding at the right end has storey-posts with straight braces and a weatherboarded gable end.

Inside, the left room has a chamfered cross-beam and a large fireplace with a cambered timber lintel. The centre room features an unchamfered cross-beam and a fireplace with a cambered timber lintel, which includes an oven.
