Description
The George Hotel is a building located on Higher Cheap Street, dating back to 1625. It is believed to have originated in the early 16th century and may have been part of Becket's Chapel or Hospital. The hotel features a two-storey frontage that is set back, with a passage leading to George Street, which has a moulded stone four-centred arch. The front of the building has undergone significant alterations, including a new roughcast finish. On the first floor, there are four widely spaced altered sash windows, while the ground floor includes wood casements and sash windows, including three small bays. The main doorway has a flat painted architrave and an altered hood. The roof is covered with plain tiles at the front and back, except for the passageway at the south end, which is covered with stone slates. Inside, there are moulded beams, a four-centred fireplace, and a spice cupboard with ventilator holes. The George Hotel forms a group with Nos 1 to 15 (odd) Cheap Street.
