Description
Rookery Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 15th and 17th centuries, located in Church Street, Burton Bradstock. The cottage features rubble stone walls and has two sleeper-buttresses on the left side. It has a thatched roof with gable ends and brick stacks at the end gables. The building is 1½ to 2 storeys high and has four windows, which are two-light wooden casements with glazing bars, along with wooden cills and lintels. The entrance includes a plank door with three glass lights, dating from the 19th century, and a wooden lintel above it.
Inside, there is a cross-passage with a plank-and-muntin screen on the left side, dating from the 16th century. A stone spiral staircase is located in the corner of the lower end room, next to the fireplace, which features a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel that has filleted stops. The cottage has jointed-cruck trusses with early purlins, and there is a projecting stack on the east gable wall with two sets of set-offs. The interior also includes another open fireplace with a similar lintel and a keeping-place beside it. The ground-floor ceiling beams are heavily chamfered and likely date from the early 17th century.
