Description
The Dorset Military Museum, built between 1876 and 1877, was originally the gatehouse to the Infantry Barracks. It is possibly designed by Major A C Seddon, who was the head of the War Office design branch at that time. The building is constructed from rock-faced Portland stone and stands four storeys tall. It features a crenellated parapet supported by corbels. At the front corners, there are round turrets that rise higher than the rest of the building, and these turrets are connected by a corbelled stone balcony at the first floor level. The façade includes seven ranges of lancet windows, and there is a segment-headed archway with spur stones. The lancet windows are arranged in a spiral pattern within the towers.
