Description

The north west block of the former Infantry Barracks, built between 1876 and 1877, is possibly designed by Major A C Seddon, who was the head of the War Office design branch at that time. The building is constructed of rock-faced Portland stone with ashlar dressings. It features a three-storey gatehouse that is connected by one-storey wings to two-storey end pavilions. The structure includes decorative bands and a crenellated parapet on the gatehouse. The roofs are pitched slate, hipped over the pavilions.

The gatehouse has a three-centred archway flanked by round-headed lancets. The first floor contains four round-arched sash windows with glazing bars, with the centre two set in a round-headed relieving arch. The second floor has three round-arched sashes with glazing bars. Each wing features six round-arched sashes with glazing bars. The end pavilions have three ranges of windows each, and all windows are linked by hoodmoulds.
