Description
Nos 1 and 2 High West Street are a pair of buildings dating from the early 19th century, with the remainder added around 1900. They are constructed from Portland ashlar and rise three storeys. The basement is horizontally rusticated, while the next two storeys feature a giant order with a full entablature and balustrade. The ground floor has fixed windows, and the upper floors have sash windows with glazing bars. The original section of the building has a three-bay Composite frontispiece, with windows in these bays having moulded embrasures. The central first-floor window features a dentilled cornice supported by scrolled consoles. A 20th-century polished granite door surround with a segmental pediment is present, and the remaining ground floor windows have triple keystones. The upper floor windows of the later block also have moulded embrasures, with the central first-floor window again having a cornice on scrolled consoles. The building is accented by long and short quoins, and a chimney is located in the centre of the balustrade, flanked by fluted urns.
